Sounds like a lovely way to spend NYE. I’m a voracious reader of mysteries, cozy and (semi) hard-boiled. To me, they are comfort reading, and now you’ve got me thinking about why I find them comforting. I loved Still Life, BTW.
I know! I’m a huge fan of mysteries, too (I taught a writing course in part on detective fiction and noir) and find them engaging and clever but also accessible. I also feel that you can pick them up and put them down more easily during the day between chores in a way that you can’t, necessarily from other kinds of books…

I’m engrossed in Ann Cleve’s Shetland series right now. I love mysteries in which the setting is almost another character in the story.
